Here, in the dead of Winter, amongst the endless expanse of snow and never ending gusts of cold wind, it’s difficult to to imagine sunshiney days and lush, green landscapes.
At Elkhart Landscaping, we’re always thinking ahead and so should you.
Get into Spring by thinking about what you would like to do with your landscape.
Know your climate:
Some plants can only grown in hot, humid climates. You don’t see Palm trees in the Midwest. You’ll never see a Balsam Fir in the South. These trees simply cannot withstand the climate so far removed from their “home” base.
Choose your trees and plants wisely taking into consideration your regional climate.
Prepare:
Most Springtime preparation starts in the Fall prior to the season but there are some things you can still do in winter to prepare for Springtime landscaping.
Check your hoses for any holes or major leaks
Make sure your gardening tools are clean and ready for season
Have your lawn mower/weed whacker tuned up
Research:
Knowing what fruits and flowers to plant can be a daunting task for the non-gardener out there.
Just like people, not all plants like to living together.
We all know peppers and tomatoes go great together in salsa but that doesn’t mean they get along before they’re harvested. If you plant peppers and tomatoes together both will struggle to survive and neither will produce the kind of fruit and veggies you're expecting.
This goes for other plant life as well so make sure your Black Walnut tree is placed very far from your Apple Tree, and pretty much every other type of plant you’d want in your garden or landscape.
Plot out your yard:
Make a rough sketch of what your dream landscape would be.
Are you interested in simply green spaces or something a little more non-traditional? How about a rock garden or babbling brook running through your property?
Is there a tree that creates too much of a mess in your yard? How about having it removed?
Have you always wanted a square-foot garden? How about a planter patch for your herbs and spices?
Is there a section of your yard that is bare and could use a little sprucing up? How about planting a Spruce?
Anything is possible with the proper preparation, game plan, and execution.
Take the time now to map out what you’d like your yard to look like.
